Grand opening held for [Salt River Flats] 192-unit affordable housing complex in south Phoenix
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Gov. Katie Hobbs and other Valley leaders attended the official grand opening of the latest affordable housing complex in Phoenix.
Salt River Flats near Broadway Road and 16th Street is home to 192 units for families who make 60% or less of the average income in the area.
“This is not just a poor people problem. This is a problem for working folks who really want to live in their own communities,” said Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jack Sellers.
The new community is part of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors’ $17 million budget for affordable housing projects.
Salt River Flats has been in the works since Oct. 2022 and features one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments along with a clubhouse, pool, fitness center, park and much more.
“It’s been kind of, you know, freeing,” said resident Stefanie Romero.
Romero is a mother of five and struggled to find affordable housing within her area for her family.
“I was a stay-at-home mom for 11 or 12 years, so I had zero credit. When I went through my separation, I needed to find something for me and my kids that was safe and stable but with no credit,” Romero said.
Gov. Hobbs said this is the third affordable housing development that has opened up in Arizona just this month.
The hope is that this new rental community can be a step forward for many people in Arizona struggling to find affordable housing.
“We typically have a lot more applicants for these units then we have units available. So, this is beginning to address the problem, but we need to have a lot more projects like this,” said Sellers.
